Objective: To study a proper method for the measurement of ovarian stroma area (S) and total ovarian area (A) and to evaluate the diagnostic value of ultrasound parameters of S, A and S/A ratio for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Method: S, A and S/A ratio were measured by transvaginal ultrasound and serum levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone (T) and LH/FSH ratio were assayed in 63 PCOS patients compared with 23 women with normal menstrual cycle during the early follicular phase (days 3-8) of the menstrual cycle in regularly cycling controls and on a random day in amenorrheic patients. S, A and S/A ratio were measured with three methods respectively to make sure if there were any differences within them. The results were divided into 3 groups: group 1 using area of oblong to calculate, group 2 outlining the margin of ovary and ovarian stroma to automatically calculate area, group 3 using area of oval to calculate. Results: ①Patients with PCOS showed significantly higher ovarian S and S/A ratio when compared to those of the control groups (2.76±0.10 vs 1.16±0.17, P<0.001; 0.46±0.01 vs 0.29±0.02, P<0.001). ②S/A ratio was related to serum levels of LH(P<0.05). S was related to serum levels of FSH (P<0.05). ③Using three different methods of calculation for area, S and A of group 1 were significantly...
