Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore a kind of feasible efficacy evaluation method for gingivitis prevention and treatment through comparing the efficacy of the toothpaste containing triclosan/copolymer and the toothpaste containing honeysuckle/wild chrysanthemum with Chinese medicine(CM) and western medicine (WM) method.Methods: Eighty volunteers, who met the enrollment standards from Chengdu, China, participated in this study. The indexes of both WM (plaque index and gingivitis index) and CM (primary and secondary symptom indexes) were used. The primary CM symptom included gum bleeding, gum pain and gum redness and swelling. The secondary CM symptom included dry mouth and inclining of drink, disliking of hot and liking of cold, polyorexia, anergia knees and loin, dizziness and tinnitus, burning sensation of five centers, halitosis, dry stool and yellowish or reddish urine.
