Objective: To explore the causes and pathogenesis of melanosis coli as well as its relationship with age, sex and colorectal neoplasm. Methods: The clinical data of 24 patients with melanosis coli diagnosed by endoscopy and histopathological examination from September 2002 to December 2003 were analyzed on age, sex, history of constipation, Laxatives use retrospectively. Results: Of 24 cases , 21 cases (87.50%) had constipation history. 18 cases (75.00%) had used laxatives. The incidence of melanosis in patients of 60 years old or elder is significantly higher than that of younger. 15 cases (62.50%) were affected throughout their right hemicolon and ileocecal junction. The severity of lesion has marked relationship with the duration of drug usage. The usage duration in grade â…¢ is significantly longer than that in grade â…¡ and â…  . 1 case (4.17%) suffered from colon cancer and 2 cases (8.33%) had adenomatous polyps, which indicate melanosis coli has corelationship with colon neoplasm .Conclusions: 1, Melanosis coli is a benign condition featured by black changing of the colonic mucosa.2, Melanosis coli is mainly related with constipation and abuse of laxatives .3, Melanosis coli is closely related with age.
