Objective To investigate the situation of human resources of tuberculosis prevention and control system at the region,district,county level in Shanxi province, to further improve the equipping situation of human resources ,and to provide objective evidence for carrying out the training program.Methods According to the questionnaire of the situation and training requirement of tuberculosis prevention and control professionals in china which is made by china CDC and the situation in shanxi provionce ,we made the questionnaire of the situation and training requirement of tuberculosis prevention and control professionals in shanxi province.The questionnaires were handed to all tuberculosis prevention and control professionals at every level in Shanxi in July 15th, 2005, and were finally took back in July 30th ,2005. The results were analyzed with Excel and SPSS 13.0.Results There were 599 tuberculosis prevention and control professionals at region,district,county level in Shanxi province ,including provincial level 11 professionals. There were 253 male and 346 female and the male female ratio is 1:1.37.The average age was 37.6 years. People who had educational background of university accounted for 51.4%. Primary and middle job titles constituted the main population, about 93.5%. The majors were mainly public health and clinical medicine, occupied 62.7%. The ratio of TB control professionals to the whole population in Shanxi was 1:5.5 thousand and each professional was in charge of 2.5 functions on average. People who worked at diagnostic and therapeutic management and laboratory were 138(23.2%) and 120(20.2%), monitoring 90(15.1%), supervisor 4.7% and health education 1.2%. 448 had been trained for their primary duty(76.5%), among which 94.6% was item planning administrators, while only 25.0% was health instructors.Study of work skills according to whether people have been trained showed that, item planning administrators were the best to be expert (84.8%), while only 53.8% supervisors could practice their skills well. For item planning administrators, diagnostic and therapeutic managers, statistic monitors, there was statistically significant difference in the degree of skill control between those who had received training and those who had not been trained; but for laboratory work and drug management, there were no statistic difference. These results indicated that it would be effective to raise the skill level of TB control and prevention professionals though emphasis training on item planning administrators, diagnostic and therapeutic managers and statistic monitors. It also showed laboratory work and drug management need longer period of practice to be skilled.
