Objective: To study the relation of age and pathological characteristics in esophageal cancer. Methods: A retrospective study was undertaken in 174 esophageal cancer patients with complete records who had undergone treatment in the department of thoracic surgery of the first Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University, and the patients were classified into young, middle and old groups according to the international standard. Variables were evaluated by x~2 test, using the SPSS 13.0 Statistical Software package. All of the patients were diagnosed by histological examinations. Results: The mean age was 58 years, the percentage of young (≤40 years old) , middle (41 ~60 years old) and old (>60 years old) patients were 6.3%, 60.5% and 33.2% respectively; as the increasing of age, the rate of poorly differentiated cancer decreased from 50% to 8.1%(P<0 05); metastatic localized lympha nodes ratio decreased from 65.4% to 36.5%, the Ⅲ stage cancer rate decreased from 50% to 27%, however, preoperative complications increased from 23.1% to 44.6%, postoperative complications increased from 3.8% to 18.6%(P<0 05). Conclusions: There were significant differences in pathological characteristics of esophageal cancer in different ages. Progression of disease was faster with low tumor classification, high metastatic localized lymph nodes ratio, advanced TNM classification in young esophageal cancer patients. However, in the old group the progression of disease was slower with high tumor...
