Background: We have just studied the occupational personality of nursing staff in the past 20 years. These studies involved such fields as: personality and mental health,personality and stress,personality and social support. Few studies involved personality and coping style in nursing managers. Psychologists think: personality is the most important factor that can effect the motive, behavior style, mental health and inter-relationship, so it can predict individual working efficiency. Although it is common that managers are picked up through personality tests in abroad, it is not the case in china. It is urgent that How to use the personality tests to assess nursing managers and improve the efficiency of selecting.Objective: To determine the personality and coping style of nursing supervisor in Sichuan Province and to analyze the correlation between them. To identify the factors which affecting the coping style, and provide the base for evaluating and selecting the nursing supervisor. Subjects: The nursing supervisors from 13 comprehensive hospitals inSichuan province, who have been working at this position for at least one year.Methods: The Cross-sectional survey was used. 350 nursing supervisors was picked up randomly from Sep, 2003 to Jan, 2004. Their personality were assessed by Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), and their coping styles were measured by The Coping Style Questionnaire (CSQ). Statistical Analysis: All data was put into the statistical software spssll.O. The statistical methods involved: One-way ANOVA ; Pearson Interco-relation analysis; Multiple linear regression analysis. Results: The score of extraversion is 11.87±4.13, psychoticism is 3.87±2.31, neuroticism is 9.48±4.95, and the tendency to "fake good" is 15.08±3.24, The results showed that there is significant difference between the subjects and normal(P<0.01); Most of the 330 subjects often use mature coping style (83.3%). There is a positive correlation between extroversion and mature coping style, between immature coping style and psychoticism or neuroticism. In mature coping style, there is statistical difference between different age groups ^ working period and position period. And there is statistical difference between different working period and education in mixed coping style. The factors that affecting coping style are as fellows: the dimension of neuroticism > extroversionN psychoticism > the age of nursing supervisors, working period and education background. Conclusion:K Comparing with the normal, the subjects are more extroverted and disguised, and better at the dimensions of neuroticism and psychoticism. 2^ Most of the coping styles used by subjects are mature, such as:problem-resolved and looking for help.3 n Healthy personality is benefit to form the mature coping style. 4^ The dimension of neuroticism contribute the most to coping style, inaddition, the subjects' coping style is related to extroversion,psychoticism, and the age^ working period ^ education background ofnursing supervisors . Suggestion for further study:1 > The intervention study of personality assessment should be done.2 ^ Further study should be done to identify the difference between fromdifferent positions ^ working departments and hospitals.
