BackgroundAs a kind of affective disorder, depression has the basic symptom of mood depression accompanied by thought disorder, associative thinking disorder and decreased volitional activities. Some scholars have pointed out that depression has an increasing morbidity rate, and has become the main risk for human physical and mental health in the twenty-first century.Based on its latest statistics,WHO predicts that depression will become the second risk for global health in 2020.Not only does depression suffers patients personally, but also causes a great burden to the family economy and society, thus becoming a serious social and medical problem.Depression is a disease with unknown etiology and complex pathogenesis, and is generally considered to be caused by multiple factors.Modern medicine has established various hypotheses based on the researches into depression from the aspects of neural biochemistry, neuroendocrine and so forth. The modern medical model has transformed from the biomedical model to the bio-psycho-social one.Accordingly, researches on depression has expanded from the field of biology to that of psychology and sociology. One study confirmed a complex relationship correlation between personality temperament and depression. And bad personality traits and negative automatic thinking are important risk factors for refractory depression.ObjectiveThis paper intends to collect clinical cases of patients with depression in order to analyze the correlation among depression,five-pattern personality, negative automatic thinking and trait coping style, specifically: 1)to explore the correlation among depression,five-patternpersonality characteristics, negative automatic thinking and trait coping style;2)to find out the relationship between five-pattern personality in patients with depression and negative automatic thinking and trait coping style;3)to make some contribution to the enrichment of TCM syndrome differentiation and ultimately aim to provide a reference for the implementation of comprehensive prevention and treatment measures including psychosocial interventions for those susceptible to or suffering from depression.MethodsIn this study,a cross-sectional survey was conducted among 83 patients(47 males,36females)who met the diagnostic criteria of depression depicted in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM-V).Among them, the age ranged from 18 to60 years old with an average age of 38.36±11.83 and an average studying period of9.77±6.13 years. At the same time the control group recruited 91 healthy volunteers.Research tools used in the study include a questionnaire for general situation,five-pattern personality test,a questionnaire of negative automatic thinking and a questionnaire of coping style. After recollecting these questionnaires and inputting all the data into the computer, the paper used the statistical software SPSS20.0,firstly to conduct a differential analysis of the gender, age, education and other scales among these two groups of subjects, and secondly to analyze the correlation between five-pattern personality characteristics and negative automatic thinking and trait coping style in the depression group.Results1.There were no significant differences in age(t=0.344,P=0.732),sex(?2=0.046,P=0.830),marital status(?2= 0.283,P= 0.595),single child situation(?2= 0.151,P = 0.698)and educational level(?2=1.367,P=0.242)between the depression group and the control group.2.The survey of the five-pattern personality showed that the scores of Tai Yang(t=-8.277,P=0.000),Shao Yang(t=-10.105,P=0.000)and Yin Yang He Ping(t=-5.989,P=0.000)in the depression group were lower than those in the control group. The scores of ShaoYin(t=-4.877,P=0.000)and TaiYin(t=-10.741,P=0.000)in the depression group were higher than those in the control group. The two results were statistically significant.3.The survey of trait coping style in the depression group showed that there was no significant difference in terms of positive response in gender(t=0.169,P=0.866),single child situation(t=-1.602,P=0.113),marital status(t=-1.331,P=0.187),and education(t=-1.429,P=0.157),and no significant difference in terms of negative coping style in gender(t=-0.044,P=0.965),marital status(t=1.327,P=0.188),single child situation(t=1.748,P=0.884)and education(t=1.615,P=0.110).There were significant differences in terms of the positive coping style and negative coping style between the depression group and the control group, which was statistically significant.4.The survey of five-pattern personality in the depression group showed that, firstly, automatic thinking was negatively correlated with TaiYang(r=-0.986,P=0.000),ShaoYang(r=-0.983,P=0.000)and YinYangHe Ping(r=-0.980,P=0.000),and was positively correlated with ShaoYin(r=0.977,P=0.000)and TaiYin(r=0.982,P=0.000).Secondly,positive coping style was positively correlated with TaiYang(r=0.970,P=0.000),ShaoYang(r=0.973,P=0.000)and YinYangHePing(r=0.966,P=0.000),and was negatively correlated with ShaoYin(r=-0.980,P=0.000)and TaiYin(r=-0.975,P=0.000).Thirdly,negative coping style was negatively correlated with Tai Yang(r=-0.991,P=0.000),ShaoYang(r=-0.977,P=0.000)and YinYangHe Ping(r=-0.974,P=0.000),and was positively correlated with ShaoYin(r=0.971,P=0.000)and TaiYin(r=0.974,P=0.000).Conclusions1.Personality risk factors for patients with depression is negative character trait characterized by slightly higher scores of ShaoYin and TaiYin,while positive character trait is featured by slightly lower scores of TaiYang and ShaoYang.2.In the treatment of stress events, patients with depression have a higher frequency of negative automatic thinking and a rather low self cognition and evaluation, thus often adopting negative coping style including remorse, elusion and so on.Depression will beaggravated when stress events cannot be solved effectively.3.Patients with depression tend to have characters of ShaoYin and TaiYin.When such people encounter something unpleasant, they tend to have a higher frequency of negative automatic thinking, and choose negative coping style including avoidance,elusion,etc.4.The Stimulation of Yang Qi may be an important treatment for the clinical treatment of depression based on Traditional Chinese Medicine. In addition,it may be an important treatment to change the negative coping style and reduce the frequency of negative automatic thinking.
