Constipation is one of the vulgar accompanying symptoms of apoplexy. It represents as small in amount or stiffness of stool, also difficult in or prolonged time of defecation. For patients with apoplexy, emphatically defecating by reason of constipation can result a series of results such as heightening celiac pressure, strengthening of systole, rise of blood pressure. They means a high risk of reapoplexy or deterioration of intrinsic disease. So keeping an unobstructed defecation is very important to recovery of apoplexy. But clinically, there is a vicious spiral that can interfere the treatment. That is, those patients with apoplexy have a slowed gastrointestinal peristalsis caused by reasons such as long-time lying-up or changed posture. Clinically, treatment to constipation followed apoplexy is mainly about enema or take cathartic orally. Although they are effective on a certain extent, those therapies are not so perfect due to difficulty in getting about and limited alimentary function of patients with apoplexy.The therapy of applying medicine to the umbillicus has a long history, a wide foundation and a certain effect. Due to it's conveniency, this therapy has a value to be researched and developed.â… , An overview of literature1, Comprehension of constipation in Traditional Chinese Medicine There is a comprehension in The Yellow Emperor' s Internal Classic that constipation has a relationship with chill in spleen and stomach or heat in intestines. Zhang Zhongjing in Han Dynasty has a more comprehensive understanding of constipation. He suggested different pathogenesis, that is, constipation caused by cold, heat, deficiency and sthenia. He created several principles of treatment. They are purgation with bitter cold drugs like drastic purgative decoctions; purgation and warming up the interiorwith drugs like Rhubarb and Prepared Aconite Decoction; causing laxation by nourishing yin with drugs like Hemp Seed Pill; causing laxation by regulating qi with drugs like Magnolia Bark and other two herb Decoction and relax the bowels with honey suppository. Those methods has created basic principles to recognize and treat constipation for doctors of later ages. Some of them are still in common use nowadays. Standard of Diagnosis and Curative Effect of Traditional Chinese by State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine classified constipation into two main syndroms. They are yang constipation and asthenic-type constipation. Yang constipation is classified into three syndromes, and asthenic-type constipation is classified into four. The first step of treating constipation is to distinguish the syndrome and then take different methods. In detail, methods for yang symdrome are mainly about purging heat, conducting qi, warming up the interior and dispelling cold. And methods for deficiency symdrome is mainly about nourishing qi, warming yang, nourishing yin and enriching the blood. Becides taking decoction of medicinal ingredients orally, Chinese medicine has many distinctive therapies such as acupuncture, massage, cupping and scrape therapy.2, Cognition of constipation of modern medicine Constipation is a symptom that can caused by many diseases. It represents as difficult and prolonged defecation or obviously abatement of exhausting stool without cathartic.In term of different standards, constipation can be classified into several kinds. It can be classified as acute or chronic according to course or mode of onset, organic pathologic or functional by whether a organic pathologic change exists, and colonic or rectal by position where stool resorts. Colonic constipation is that food residue resorts in the colon and marches too slowly, and rectal constipation means that stools that have reached the rectum resorts and cannot be discharged. So rectal constipation is also called difficult fecal discharge. Constipation concludes two kinds of symptoms. They are difficult in discharging and reduced time of defecation. Constipation can be resulted from many factors, such as irrational habits of diet, unhealthy habits of defecation, change of envioronment and position of defecation. Also pregnancy, senility and dystrophy can result in constipation.
