Objective: To explore the clinical value of Tei index in assessment of left and right ventricular function in patients with essential hypertension. Methods: Ninety-six patients with essential hypertension were enrolled. According to Ganau categories, these patients were divided into four groups as follows: normal left ventricle(group â… , 25 cases), concentric remodeling(group â…¡, 26 cases), concentric hypertrophy(group â…¢,27 cases) and eccentric hypertrophy(group â…£,18 cases), and 30 age-matched healthy subjects as contral group were included. The end-diastolic diameters of left ventricle(LVEDD), interventricular septum thickness(IVST), left ventricular posterior wall thickness(LVPWT), E/A ratio(E/A) at septal and tricuspid orifice were measured. Ea/Aa ratio(Ea/Aa) and s at septal and tricuspid annulus by Doppler Tissue Imaging were detected. Also, left and right ventricular ejection fraction(EF) and Tei index were measured. Results: Compared with control group, Ea/Aas in four groups were lower than that of the normal and s was decreased in â…£group. EF only in â…£group was greatly decreased. Left ventricular Tei indices of all groups were increased than that of the normal. There was significant difference between group â…¢and â… , as well as between Groups â…£and â… ,â…¡,â…¢in left ventricular Tei index. Right ventricular Tei indices of groups â…¡,â…¢,â…£were increased than that of the normal. There was significant difference between group â…¢andâ… ,â…¡,as well as between Group â…£and â… , â…¡,â…¢in right ventricular Tei index. Left and right ventricular Tei index was negatively correlated with s , EF , and Ea/Aa. Right ventricular Tei index,EF, Ea/Aa, E/A was positively correlated with that of the left ventricular respectively. Conclusions: Left and right ventricular function in hypertension changed. The impairment degree of function was different in different patterns, among of them concentric hypertrophy and eccentric hypertrophy had the serious impairment. Global function of left ventricular was decreased in the early stage. Left and right ventricular function influence each other. That left ventricllar Tei index increased earlier than that of right ventricular hinted left ventricular global function changed earlier than right ventricular. Tei index was valuable and easy for estimating left and right ventricular systolic and diastolic functions with high sensitivity.
