ObjectivesJob burnout is a kind of exhaustion on body, emotion and mental caused by stress from work. It always occurs in workers of human service, especially in nurses.We investigated the level and epidemic features of burnout in nurses. The risk factors were also studied in order to prepare for the intervention study in future. MethodsThe MBI-Human Service Survey, the Coping Style Inventory (by Xiao Jihua) and the Social Supporting Inventory (by Xiao Shuiyuan) were used in our investigation. We also designed a questionnaire including items to measure populace factors, workload, job satisfaction and job difficulty. 1032 nurses in hospitals of Beijing and Guangzhou attend our investigation. T-test, ANOVA and multiple linear stepwise regression analysis were used. ResultsThe level of depersonalization and diminished personal accomplishment in our investigation were lower than the norm from North America by Maslach.Nurses in emergency department, ICU and medical department had higher level of burnout than those in other departments. Nurses who were 21 to 25 years old had higher level of depersonalization.Regression equations of emotion exhaustion, depersonalization and diminished personal accomplishment were established by multiple linear stepwise regression analysis. From the equation of emotion exhaustion, we knew that higher workload, self-blaming coping style, retreat coping style, more chance of salving patient, more night shift were related with higher level of emotional exhaustion.
