Objective: To investigate the effect of salpingectomy on the response of ovary in patients undergoing an IVF-ET treatment cycle. Methods: The ovarian response to superovulation were evaluated in patients who previously had undergone unilateral/bilateral salpingectomy because of ectopic pregnancy(study group) and patients with tubal infertility with existing salpinx served as controls. Results: There were no differences in the total numbers of retrieved oocytes, fertilized oocytes, cleaved oocytes, or the pregnancy rates between study and control group. Among the patients who had undergone salpingectomy, there were no differences in the numbers of retrieved oocytes from the ovary on the operated side and contralateral side. Conclusions: Salpingectomy has no significant detrimental effect on the total ovarian performance during IVF-ET treatment or the outcome of IVF-ET. A prophylatic laparoscopic salpingectomy prior to IVF in patients with hydrosalpinges can be performed.
