Objective The present study was planned to research the effects of fibrin glue(FG) and growth hormone(GH) on the anastomoses of the small bowel at normal or at peritonitis. Methods Resection and anastomoses of the small bowel at normal or at peritonitis was performed in rats. In group A: a standard anastomosis was constructed with 12 silk sutures; in group B: an incomplete anastomosis was constructed with only 4 silk sutures; in group C: incomplete anastomosis+FG; in group D: incomplete anastomosis+GH; in group E: incomplete anastomosis+FG+GH. On days 1 ,3 and 5,ten rats in each group was killed. The healing of anastomosis were evaluated, the anastomotic bursting pressure and hydroxyproline concentration were measured. More over using FG on the anastomoses of the small bowel in pigs was evaluated. Results At normal: In group A,the bursting pressure was the lowest on day 3(30.5±5.5mmHg);The bursting pressure in group C was lower than in group A on day 1,but it increased significantly and was higher than in group A on day 3 and 5,the healing of the anastomoses was significantly improved(false-healing 6.25%, 11.76% in group A, P<0.05). At peritonitis: In group A the bursting pressure was low from day 1 to day 3(17.5±10.1mmHg and 35.5±10.9mmHg each),false-healing was 30.23%,significantly higher than at normal;but the healing of the anastomoses was significantly improved in group C,false-healing was only 11.76%(P<0.05). The addition of GH did not improve healing. The anastomoses of the small bowel in pigs using fibrin glue was successful,false-healing was 9.09%,the same as control;the bursting pressure was 224.0±32.3mmHg(176.0±21.0mmHg in control,P<0.05);but the hydroxyproline concentration of each group showed no differences. Conclusion FG can help the healing of the small bowel anastomoses at normal or at peritonitis, and can protect it from complications. The present experimental study in rats and pigs in favour of its clinical use.
