Memory is the nervous coursethat the knowledge was saved and read out. Learning and memorydepend on each other for existence. In TCM it is considered thatlearning and memory embody the function of internal organs andclosely related with internal organs especially with heart, kidneyand brain. The heart controls mental activity. Kidney stores essenceand connected with the brain. The essence and blood of the kidneyand heart is the material base of learning and memory. In the courseof the human body's aging, the blood of heart and the essence inthe kidney reduced. Thus the decreasing learning and memoryability always accompanied with aging. Amnesia, decrease oflearning and memory ability and even dementia have become theimportant factors which affected the quality of life of the oId. It isconsidered in TCM that the factors resulted in disability of learningand memory are nothing more than deficiency, blood stagnation andphlegm, among which the yin and blood deficiency of the heart andkidney is the key point. The rules of treatment on it are tonifying,moving blood stagnation and reducing phlegm, among whichtonifying especially tonifying yin and blood of the heart and kidneyis most important.Long-term potential (LTP), a model of synaptic plasticity, is anindex of neuron action during the course of remembering and showsthe course of learning and memory on neuron synaptic level. Morris3water maze (MWM) is a neuro-ethology index to measure thelearning and memory ability of animal. The two indexes bothrefiect the associative learning and procedural memory. Thisexperiment was directed by the TCM theory ofheart-kidney-marrow-brain axis. The effects of strengthenkidney-yin and nourishing the heart and tranquilization on the agedand yin-deficiency rat model was observed through the rathippocampal slice technique and MWM. Two steps made the model:First intraperitoned injection of D-glucose was used to causesubacute aging, the dose was 48mg/kg/d, once a day, six weeks.Then the rats were divided into two groups: the aged rat mode1sgroup and the aged and yin-deficiency rat model group. Second theaged and yin-deficiency rat model was fed with L-thyroxin sodium,the dose is 20mg/kg/d, once a day, ten days. Then this group wasdivided into four groups randomly: TianWangBuXingDan group,LiuWeiDiHuangTang group, heart-kidney connected group and agedand yin deficiency group. TianWangBuXingDan group,LiuWeiDiHuangTang group and heart-kidney group were fed withTianWangBuXingDan, LiuWeiDiHuangTang, TianWangBuXingDanand LiuWeiDiHuangTang respective1y for a month, then tested.Ouc. Neuro-etboIogy Te8t of learning aud memory abiIityUse the MWM to test their escape latency. The results indicatedthat the aged and yin-deficiency rat model's escape latency islonger than other groups', and there is no difference among theother three groups. But the data of heart-kidney connected group isbetter than TianWangBuXingDan group's and LiuWeiDiHuangTanggroups. This shows thc learning and memory abiIity of the aged andyin-deficiency rat model is worse than the aged ratmodel's.TianWangBuXingDan ans LiuWeiDiHuangTang can4Two.
