Abstract/Summary:
Piglet coccidiosis is a parasitic protozoosis, causing serious diarrhea. Thedisease mainly results from Isospora suis parasitizing small intestine epithelial cell ofnursing and freshly weaned piglets. Its main pathogen is I. suis, and the infected pigletsat 1 or 2 weeks postnatal exhibit nonhemorragic yellow or white diarrhea, with a lowmortality, but often followed by a consecutive bacterial or viral diseases, which increasesmortality in piglets and causes great economic losses in pig farms.Fenghai Breeder pig farms of Shanghai farm, established in 2003, holds 1200 sows atstock, with Large White, Landrace, Duroc as its main breeds, supplies for markets 6000breeders and 15 000 commercials each year. The breeder farm maintained a goodproduction until a high incidence of diarrhea rate(80%) and a mortality of 5%-8% innursing piglet in September 2005. Through zoological investigation and pathologicaldiagnosis, the disease was diagnosed as I. suis. After pharmacological screening for aproper medication, Toltrazuril was selected with a best prevention age of 5 DOA inpiglets. Otherwise, feeding Amprolium could effectively, control the disease. Throughconstruction of the comprehensive control measures including the parasitic expellingregulation in sows and environmental hygiene regulation especially in labouring houses, the diarrhea by I. suis in piglets was cured. The findings demonstrated that destroying thespreading pathway would be the best control measure of Isospora coccidiosis in pigs, anda dry, clean environment with proper medication would help.
