Since the reform and opening up, with the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization progress, the Spatial Growth of urban space has faced a wonderful time. In recent years, as the sustainable development concept related to our life closer, the problem caused by the rapid and disorderly growth of urban and the environmental protection problem when we develop the economy, promoting social progress, are now very hot topics in our daily life. This is the start point of this thesis. In the thesis, "the growth of urban space" contains two basic requirements:firstly, the growth process must be consistent with sustainable principles. It means the safety of the growth-body (urban space) is as much important as the enduring vitality; secondly, the growth process should be consistent with the rules of the urban space development system. This thesis integrated these two requirements, trying to explore a socio-economic rule, which is suitable for the space development. It also combined the control method of ecology which includes the protection of natural and cultural resources, in order to control the sprawl spread of urban, conserve resources, promote space sustainable development. This paper focuses on the small cities in underdeveloped areas, used Chengcheng city (Shaanxi) as a case study. Based on the deep study of the urban growth concept, the system research of the related theoretical and experience material all over the world, a reasonable method of controlling the growth of urban space has been built. After that, the case study of the Chengcheng city has been discussed in details.1. At the beginning, the urban space is used as an individual. The mechanism and the primary dynamic of the growth of urban space are used as external. Then it was discussed that the origin of urban development and characteristics by using the method called "from outside to inside".2. By analyzing the relationship between the elements of urban space within the development process and the overall development process of urban spatial, it has been discussed that the interaction mechanisms between all the elements within the urban space by using the "from outside to inside" method again, in order to get the core element from the overall development process.3. Based on the previous analysis, the trends and prospects of urban development, used core elements of the overall development of urban space as evaluate standard, using GIS multi-criteria evaluation technology to establish an integrated model to evaluate the urban land for development. This model offer a reasonable urban space development simulation, determine usage of the different regions. Based on that, the strategy of supply of urban spatial development has been discussed. Finally, according to scientific, dynamic layout Concept (stage planning), the expand amount of space and the land structure were controlled reasonably, in order to completed the layout scheme.Based on the research, this thesis simplified the study of the growth of urban space to a dynamic process, "Survey-Analysis-Planning (forecasting)-Implementation-Feedback". It can be modified by feedbacks. This thesis also set a proposed methodology to guide the growth of urban space. This method includes three parts, which are the research and database of the growth spatial, analysis of the spatial growth process and the trend forecasting and feedback of space growth. It can be divided into seven key processes. They are investigation, establishing a database, analysis of the growth process of urban space, analysis of the interaction mechanism of urban growth, model forecasting, from the model to the layout scheme and the dynamic feedback mechanism. Finally, the author systematically summarizes the research and makes a number of thinking at the end of the paper, in order to enrich the analysis process and ultimately give more effective guidance to urban construction.
