| Since 2000, the Civil Aviation of China sees a double-digit growth rate each year. The introduction of large airplane models and the increase in the number of flights demand high technical parameters on the runway pavement. The old airport models no longer meet domestic and international demands. Reforming old and building new airports become a heavy task. It is estimated that 40 new civilian airports need to be constructed and more than 30 need to be remodeled across the country in 2009. By the end of 2009 there will be more than 200 civilian airports in operation. In China, civilian airport runway has been mainly in cement concrete. The majority airports have been in use for more than 30 years, in a state of extended active duty. We are facing an arduous and difficult task of adding new asphalt to the old concrete or asphalt runway pavement. Through the study of the chosen subject, combined with the engineering example of mechanism of modified asphalt, the matrix selection of asphalt, the compatibility of modifier, and the performance analysis of asphalt mixture, the equipment selection, configuration and construction techniques are all analyzed and explained under usual operating conditions of airports. The success of the Xining Airport Runway Overlay project has put an end to the history of heavily relying on importing asphalt for domestic pavement constructions. The project was not only the first one on making use of domestic asphalt modifier and adopting SBS to modify bitumen single, it has also provided a good theoretical basis for modified asphalt concrete overlay techniques. This project has set a good example for future airfield pavement construction which will be held for Harbin, Tianjin, Dalian, Qingdao, Kunming, Changsha and other airports. |
