With the increasing frequency of flights, especially the growing of large size aircraft, there is a strong requirement for improve the skid resistance of the runway. Dense grade asphalt concrete has been adopted widely by airport pavement. This kind of pavement surface with little macrotexture generally has low frictional resistance in the wet state, and the skid resistance is difficult to meet flight requirements. The use of grooving in pavement surface is a common approach to improve wet weather skid resistance and reduce hydroplaning risks. Because grooving technology can significantly improve rainwater drainage of the pavement, effectively enhance of pavement friction.Grooves in airport asphalt pavements are prone to deterioration that limit their longevity at the desired level of serviceability. The grooves mainly suffer deterioration such as loss of groove volume at high temperature and wearing of asphalt concrete at low temperature. To investigate the durability of the grooving, the paper employed rutting and ravel tests to study the influence of aggregate gradation and asphalt binder on the durability of runway pavement grooving. The results show that the influence of aggregate gradation was not obvious, and modified asphalt can greatly improve the durability of the grooving. And the rate of volume deformation of grooves is recommended to evaluate the durability of the grooving.Skid resistance is one of the important performances of grooved airport asphalt pavement. The paper adopted the theoretical analysis and experimental research to study the effect water film thickness and rate of volume deformation of grooves on its skid resistance.The results show that the groove can effectively improve the skid resistance in wet conditions, and the deformation rate of grooves is one of the important factors that influenced skid resistance of airport asphalt pavements.To study the influence of parameters of grooves on the performance of airport asphalt pavement deeply, the paper summarizes several commonly parameters of grooves used in international airport asphalt pavement. Through the tests on the durability of grooving and skid resistance, a reasonable one is recommended. From Characteristics of new construction and overlay construction point of view, this paper, throng a series of laboratory simulation tests, aims to study the best time to groove and promote research and practice the technology. At last, the paper studied the construction technique of grooved airport asphalt pavement. Some details such as the time of the grooving, cutting method, personnel arrangements, the latter maintained techniques, are suggested in order to accumulate some experience for the large-scale applications of grooving technology.
