This paper pointed out that the harmonic currents generated by random in the running of tractor locomotive due to a variety of random factors, through the study of the traction power load characteristics. And applying the method of Monte Carlo simulation could be the better choice for analyzing the characteristics of harmonic currents. MATLAB software was used to build the simulation model of SS4 electrical locomotive in order to effectively simulate the harmonic currents generated by the trains in the process of running. Based on the simulation for the randomly selected variable samples, harmonic current statistical properties and probability density function of this type were acquired respectively. In this paper, the simulation results were verified using the typical measured statistics. Also, the harmonic current was analyzed by the probability method of central limit theorem. As a result of the comparison using two calculating methods, it was reliable of the analysis to harmonic current characteristics of traction load with the Monte Carlo simulation.
