Electric locomotives are one of the important instruments in railway transportation, and electric locomotives have many different running states. Besides, they are always running from one states to other state. So the electromagnetism surge so called electric locomotives electromagnetism transient is inevitable with the transformation of electric locomotives from one running state to another running state. High impactive voltage or high impactive current which go with electric locomotives electromagnetism transient possibly demolish the electrical equipments of electric locomotives and impact the normal railway transportation severely.Firstly, the paper select the electric locomotive of type SS7 for its study object, and establish the main circuit model of electric locomotive. It also establishes the traction substation model and the contact line system model in order to improve the definition by way of parenthesis. In the foundation of above model, this text also calculates the parameters of these models for the latter simulation.Secondly, the paper analyse there blooey conditions which can cause the electric locomotives electromagnetism transient in theoretics, and they are the condition that spring impulse of thyristor lose in regenerative braking state of electric locomotive,the condition that failure segregate switch of electromotor act falsely and the condition that the orientation conversion switch act falsely in traction state of electric locomotive. According to the theoretic calculation, this text also analyses the jeopardize quantificationally which the electric locomotives electromagnetism transient cause, and plot the voltage curve and current curve with the software of Matlab.Thirdly, the paper simply introduces the function of the PSCAD/EMTDC software. It uses the PSCAD/EMTDC to do electromagnetic transisent simulation of the three failure conditions. After the simulation, it can obtain its correlative voltage curve and current curve, then analyse the curves in order to validate the theoretic calculation.Finally, the paper presents two measurements of reducing the over voltage which setting RC protective apparatus and Metal oxide Arrester (MOA) protecting apparatus. Afterwards, uses the PSCAD/EMTDC to simulate these two protecting measurements. The simulation results demonstrate that the two protective measurements both can decrease the overvoltage of electric locomotives. This paper also presents to use the fuse to decrease the overcurrent of electric locomotives, and introduce how to select the fuse detailedly.
