Research On Urban Renewal Planning Of Hui Muslim Area

As the socialist market economy is developing rapidly and the urbanization process is accelerating,China's urban construction and renewal is progressing on an unprecedented scale. In the process of urban renewal, the old city is carrying the double mission - development and protection: on one hand, the old city remains one of the city centre and is facing larger population, more traffic pressure, dilapidated infrastructure which can not meet the requirements of modernization; on the other hand, the old urban areas have also facing the heavy responsibility of historical and cultural heritage protection, so how to renew the old city in a harmonious way is a major issue to modern urban development.In the powerful background of Islamic culture, Hui Muslim area has maintained its own distinctive national characteristics–"living around the temple"is a devout Muslim expression of faith;"trade around the temple"is the survival strategy of the Hui Muslim, austere and mysterious Local Customs is a valuable treasure of the city. During the rapid development of the urban renewal, it will inevitably object the dramatic transformation the consequences of which shall be devastating, how to preserve its characteristics in the hope of not being assimilated by the trend of urbanization is a daunting task.From the perspective of urban planning, how to protect its ethnic culture characteristics and how to enhance community vitality of the Hui Muslim area are the focuses of this paper.Based on the theory and practice of urban renewal and experiences from the case of Hui Muslim area in Hohhot, this thesis will discuss some planning strategy on how to renew the community under the guidance of the planning theory. I hope it will help to provide some useful reference in the future.
