English-Indian architect Laurie Baker is a "low-cost housing advocates",as a non-local architect,who devoted his life to the design of low-cost housing for the ordinary people.Faced the strange circumstance,bad natural conditions and undeveloped economic,he decided to learn Indian traditional architecture with ordinary people and artisans,fully integrated with the local residents to complete the home,schools,hospitals and other construction.He explained the detailes of rural construction. Baker always putted the demands of ordinary people as the starting point, communicated with the owners,craftsmen,and also participated in the construction activities personally.He achieved the architectural social responsibility by using reasonable ways to explain the profound significance of the building and humanistic care.The present study is based on collecting related data of his work and life,understanding his living environment,growing up process and way of work,particularly on studies of his main works and professional books,then draw a conclusion on the formation and development of his creative ideas,which made the depth research of his architectural concepts.This article analysed three parts of Laurie Baker,which are the environment,the concerns for people,the pursuits of low-cost and low-tech artistic,and the inheritance of aesthetic heritage.He learnt a lot from the Indian traditional architecture.He consided the hot,humid weather,and respectd the existing topography in oder to design a series of constructions,which compromised local circumstances.He has always been the exploration and the pursuit of low-skilled low-cost,using local materials and wasted materials,paid much attention to every details,which made a set of reducing cost vocabularies.In the hands of Baker,he dealed everything with arts.His aesthetic skills achieved by using light and shadow, regional symbols and the interpretation of the local arts.Although many of his clients are poor,his low-cost housing still has a high artistic value.Hope this essay will promote the architects to self-examination and also plan favorable architectural activities and design directions.In the face of the current situation of Chinese construction industry,we hope our architects would designed the suitable projects relyed on our country.
