In order to realize individuation design of bicycle, this paper discusses bicycle design method based on ergonomics which can provide design theory and direction, and then it applies to an example. The main research achievements are shown as follow:1. On the basis of characteristic of riding, a rider-bicycle system model is built which can simulate the process of cycling. The model of the rider contains skeletons, joints and muscle. The cycling process is simulated and the results are analyzed based on the theory of biomechanics.2. Analyzing the result of rider-bicycle system simulation, it revealed that: in the different phases of cycling, the simulation has the same conclusion about the lower extremity muscle activities with overseas scholars Brian and Li who study it with electromyography. It proves that further study can be taken on the basic of the rider-bicycle system simulation.3. The muscle fatigue is evaluated referring to a physiologically based criterion of muscle force. The results of rider-bicycle system simulations with the different riding postures revealed that the posture of rider's upper extremity is not sensitive to the muscle fatigue and the posture of rider's lower extremity has great influence on the muscle fatigue.4. To make a target of minimum of muscle fatigue, the parameter of frame structure is optimized based on the rider-bicycle system simulation. The data is gained though the general test and the uniformity test. A mathematical model, which concludes the relationship between the design variables of the frame structure and targets of muscle fatigue, is established with the help of data and stepwise regression analysis. The analysis and comparisons of results revealed that the uniformity test can reduce tines of simulation greatly and has the right conclusion.5. The analysis of the optimization result revealed that the degree of muscle fatigue which is forecasted by the mathematical model is consistent with it is gained by rider-bicycle system simulation. According to the parameters, a new frame is designed and improved based on the finite element analysis result. On the basis of above, a summary of bicycle design method and flow based on ergonomics is given.
