The Chinese Li housing represents a native residential concept, which was produced with forming of residential pattern in Units system. It formed a strong intrinsic value of residential culture with uniform habilitation pattern established by feudal centralism and evolved into various modalities by the different regional factors. On one side the Li housing is the material carrier of transition in residential culture continued traditional habilitation pattern and modality, on the other side it presented the commercial and urbanization characters of modern residential culture by inrush of exotic advantage culture. This paper tries to establish a frame for the types of the early modern Li housing in China by summarizing the distribution of Li housing's types.This paper also tried to clarify the emergence, communication and interaction of modern residential culture of Li with the central case study on Shanghai, Tianjin and Hankou, by comparatively analyzing on identity and difference in the development course, type distribution and design form. It also explained the motivations of the modern residential culture transition form view in architectural sociology.There are seven charters in this paper which includes five parts.The first part (1st chapter) is exordium which introduces the origin, purpose, significance, object, synopsis, methods, and outline of the study as well as summary of interrelated study in past, especially bring out the concept of the "Early modern Li housing in China";The second part (2nd chapter) brings forward the concept of the Li housing. It respectively discusses the evolution of ancient residential culture of Li, different regional habilitation form and extrinsic value of modern residential culture;The third part (3rd -5th chapter) is the comparative study on the modern house type of Li in Shanghai, Tianjin and Hankou. The study content includes development in different historical phases, the type distribution in urban area, the layout and architecture design of early modern Li housing.The fourth part (6th chapter) analyses the characters and transition of modern residential culture of Li, which is to explain the intrinsic value in the space evolution of early modern Li housing.The last part (7th chapter) is the conclusion of the comparative study and some uses for reference in contemporary house design.
