The article is devoted to the study of Zambian housing.The culture aspect is important as it showcases the origins of the traditional house.The main key focus area for this study is on the traditional,colonial and contemporary housing of Zambia,as can be observed in majority of African countries today as well as Zambia,traditional housing has remained unevolved in a contemporary society.Colonial and contemporary housing have become the norm and further adapted to a point that the traditional houses have become undesirable and a sign of poverty.The analysis of traditional,colonial and contemporary housing will be on space allocation,construction methods and prominent housing types(single house,multi-story complex etc.)in order to find key similarities and differences so as to bring together the traditional and contemporary house of Zambia by doing so preserving history in a tangible way that can be expressed by Zambian contemporary housing.Chapter 1 is an introduction chapter;It focuses on the research background,literature review,research objectives,research methods and structure of the paper.Chapter 2 is based on the background of Zambia;It mainly focuses on Zambia’s background and culture due to its effect in all sectors of Zambia including traditional,colonial and contemporary housing in Zambia.Chapter 3 is based on the traditional houses;The traditional settlements in Zambia and the basic traditional house,materials,function and space use.It further gives a firm account for Zambia before colonial rule of 1890 and various effects during the colonial rule from 1890 – 1964 which led to adaptations in Zambian housing.Chapter 4 is based on Zambian colonial houses in Kitwe and Lusaka;The chapter explains the history of Zambia and many advances made in early 20 th century and also takes into account the many differences between British and Zambian houses,as well as materials,function,space use and adaptations made.The time period is from 1890 – 1964.Chapter 5 is based on Zambian Contemporary houses in Kitwe and Lusaka;The chapter is concerned with the current development of Zambian housing,the problems faced and the advancements made and Government’s influence in the current housing industry.Majority of the information is from 2000 to 2021.Chapter 6 is based on the Evaluation and Comparison of the three housing types;The chapter analyses and provides results for the comparison between the traditional,colonial and contemporary housing,which is based on analysis charts,questionnaire research and interviews with practitioners in the field.The main text of the thesis is about 51,924 words,and there are more than 648 drawings and tables(among which the relevant architectural drawings and tables are drawn by me). |
