Compared with traditional lamp-house, the sulfur lamp has a lot of advantages. Such as great luminous flux, energy saving, pollution-free, the nature of high coloration, long life and so on. The investigation on the sulfur lamp at home and abroad presently is summarized. The laboratory has a great deal of experience at the the electric discharge pumped S2 laser because of the accumulation of several decades research. Based on it, the study on launching sulfur lamp drived by microwave has been on.Theoretically, the mechanism of sulfur lamp emitting by microwave-drive analyzed. It mainly contains two processes, the dissociation of sulfur polymer and the stimulation of molecular S2 from ground state to excited state( X~3Σ_g~--B~3Σ_u~-). Based on the level structure of diatomic molecules, the level structure of S2 and its spectral characteristics is analyzed. The gas discharge produces charged particles. Dissociation, excitation and ionization happen because of the collision among the charged particles. Microwave discharges in the effect of high-frequency. Above all, we can conclude that the mechanism of sulfur lamp emitting is the result of the collision among the charged particles. Sulfur polymer solution depends mainly on discharge from the dissociation and thermal dissociation. The incentive of S2 elements depends on the collisions among charged particles.Experimentally, a system for sulfur lamp is set up. The waveguide part and the lamp part are designed. Ultimately, the waveguide transmission system is made as rectangular waveguide. The size of the waveguide is a = 9.13cm, b = 5.20cm. By calculating, the maximum transmission power is 2×10~7W. The loss and the attenuation of the waveguide is analyzed. A resonant cavity is designed. It's a cylindrical metal escutcheon, the radius is 4.67 centimeter, the length is 9.80 centimeter. The TM010 mode oscillates. After calculation, sulfur powder of 50 milligram and Ar gas of 200-1500Pa are filled the sulfur lamp. At last, a lamp system for experiment is developed successfully.Finally, many experiments are carried out. The conclusion about the mechanism of the sulfur lamp emitting is validated. The characteristics of the sulfur lamp are analyzed. The luminescence spectroscopy of the sulfur lamp and the solar spectrum matched. It's a quasi-continuous spectrum. The performance of the sulfur lamp is measured. The maximum luminous flux is 56,000lm. The color temperature is about 7540K. The colour rendering index is about 85. The peak wavelength is 495nm. The efficiency of the luminescence is 40-46lm/W. Microwave leakage in the experimental system is tested. The results show that the leakage of microwave system agree international safety standards.
