Microwave sulfur lamp (MSL) is the new generation of the light sources, known asone of the environmental and energy saving green lights in the21th century. Microwaveenergy is generated by the magnetron, guided into the bulb through high frequencytransmission system, and then coupled into the bulb and inciting the argon and sulfur tocharge to light the microwave sulfur lamp. It is the working principle and lightingmechanism that make the microwave sulfur lamp having many vantages, such as highefficiency, longevity, good coloring, and non-pollution, continuous spectrum. However,due to the poor stability and greenish color, the microwave sulfur lamp has not beenwidely used in recent years, so it needs further studies.This paper focuses on researching and producing the core component ofmicrowave sulfur lamp, and assembling the whole lamp, testing the performance of thehomemade sulfur lamp, basing on the working principle and lighting mechanism of themicrowave sulfur lamp. Main contents of this article include the following aspects:Firstly, research and produce the core components of the MSL basing on theresearch the working principle and lighting mechanism of the MSL. Main productionsinclude power supply, waveguide, cavity, light boxes and sulfur bubble, the magnetron,lampshades and the motor is purchased. We assembly two entire lamps basing differentlampshade, one is the low beam light, the other is high beam light. After testing, we findthat the efficiency of homemade MSL has reached55.34lm/W, passing outsourcingsulfur lamp luminous efficiency, and the color temperature is close to the sun’s colortemperature.Secondly, the production of the sulfur bubble is also the focus of the paper, firstly,we must operate skillfully on the equipment producing the sulfur bubble, includingglove box, exhaust and console. Using the lighting mechanism to analyze the sulfurlamp fillings, select lamp fillings, determine lamp specifications. Produced bubbles aredivided into two categories, one filling different amount sulfur basing fixed argon; theother filling different argon basing fixed sulfur. We make20sulfur bubble totally.Thirdly, analyze and test the performance of the sulfur bubble and the entire lamp, and the testing equipment mainly include integrating sphere and spectrum analyzer. Westudy mainly on the spectral and color temperature of the MSL and we find that as theincrease of the sulfur’s filling amount, spectral moved to the long wave, but the amountof argon has little influence on the spectrum, the spectrum curve is substantiallycoincident. Similarly,within a certain range, as the increase of the sulfur filling amount,the color temperature decline, but the filling amount of argon has little influence on thecolor temperature and shows no change in the law.
