The research in smart materials and structure systems has been an active research area in recent years. The electro rheological(ER) technology is an advanced study with so much superior advantages and applications that it has been given much attention all over the word. The core of ER technology is ER fluid which viscous co-efficient changes rapidly, continuously and reversible under electronic field. Vehicle damper using ER fluid can produce continuous and controllable damping forces for vehicle's best ride comfort and road holding, so many scientist focus on it. The main tasks of the paper are described as follows:1. Research on ER fluidThe mechanism and variety of ER fluid are introduced in details; the function of various components and its effect are analyzed; and kinds of factors are discussed; the performance of force is studied in the opinion of engineering.2. Research on ER fluid damperA mathematical model is established based on analysis of the SIMULINK by analyzing the designed structure and the working process of the ER shock absorber. At the same time, some factors of ER damper are discussed. The results reveal that the structures of the shock absorber plays an important role in fully utilizing the ER fluid's character to increase the efficiency of vibration control. The model is available for the analysis and calculation on ER shock absorber which is meaningful for practical application.3. Research on the control strategyIntroduced the kinds of control strategy, we found the state equation of the active suspension on the optimal control strategy and use computer simulations to compare the passive suspension structure and ER active suspension. Computer simulations indicate that ER active suspension have greatly improved driving smoothing and control stability.
