As an important component part of the historical gardens in Beijing, the altar gardens have great ecological value, cultural value, economic value and social value. In the current society, the issue that would be worthy considering and researching includes: how to better protect historical landscape, inherit and develop the traditional culture, give full play to their social values, meet the need of modern city life, and create a congenial and habitable environment.This paper elaborates the concepts which concern the protection and utilization of the altar gardens, and presents the history and the status quo of the altar gardens. Based on the introduction of effective policies and measures of relative protection to the historical gardens abroad and compared with the domestic situation of protection to the historical gardens, some revelations can be drawn. Then the paper is closely around the theme — protection and utilization of the altar gardens (the research object is the ZhongShan Park [SheJI altar]), the landscape feature of the park at present can be understood historically through full study of ZhongShan Park's development. After the investigation of the park, the problem about the protection and utilization of the ZhongShan Park can be found out. Finally, the ideas and the related countermeasures on the protection and utilization of the park can be summarized on the grounds of the analysis of the problem and contradiction. Meanwhile some recommendations can be made to the overall protection and utilization of the altar gardens in Beijing.
