This article has as its subject the existing traditional architecture of the Ming and Qing dynasties in Zhenjiang, centering on its carving decoration as well as its western-style, mimic- western-style and Sino-Occidental synthetic style. There is a classification of the above architectural genres and a brief overview as to its geographical distribution and overall features. The traditional architecture and carving decoration in Zhenjiang tinge strongly of regional traits, which are embodied in a variety of subject matters, miscellaneous genres, virtuoso techniques and artistic designs. The traditional architecture in Zhenjiang and its carving decoration are achieved with the aid of such factors as particular geographical location, strong humanistic ambience, complicated economic environment and open port commerce. This article studies the historical values and artistic achievements of the traditional architecture in Zhenjiang and its carving decoration with a view to addressing their relations with modernized city development, fortifying the local traits of Chinese architecture, and applying the quintessential traditional art to modern architecture.
