In comparison with hydraulic Automatic Transmission (AT), Automatic Mechanical Transmission (AMT) has advantages of simple structure, much lower cost and smaller size. Meanwhile it possesses characteristics of lower oil consumption and rapid response superior than the traditional manual transmission. Automatic clutch is the key component of AMT, and the new automatic clutch proposed in the dissertation is designed by supplementing an Electronic Control Unit to improve its performance. It can fulfill the operations of clutch's separation and engagement which are originally performed manually. Hence the automatic clutch will dramatically reduce the labor of driving personnel, save the energy, protect the environment, and enhance the safety performance. In the dissertation, much effort has been made on the development of automatic clutch operation system and the investigation of its engagement control scheme during the process of vehicle start-up.
