Bus Rapid Transit System is a new bus-based public transportation system that delivers fast, comfortable, and cost-effective urban mobility. Through the provision of exclusive right-of-way lanes, advanced large buses and excellence in customer service, BRT essentially emulates the performance and amenity characteristics of a modern rail-based transit system but a fraction of the cost. The development of BRT represents the idea of public transportation priority, so it is widely used in the countries around the world. Firstly, this thesis introduces the concepts and components of BRT system. Then the author analyzes the influencing factors, calculation process and the optimization of BRT system Capacity.Through the comparison between BRT and other public transportation systems, the author studies the advantages of BRT system and the implementation condition of BRT project. Then the author puts forward the concept of BRT capacity and summarizes the effect of some factors to the system capacity which includes exclusive bus way, station, vehicles, operation organizations and travel demand etc. Based on the above factors, the thesis gives a calculation method of BRT capacity and the way to optimize the capacity.In the thesis, the author gives an example of BRT planning and designing. In the project of Jinan BRT planning and designing, the author gives the method of BRT capacity analysis based on the above methods that the author mentioned. Through the process of BRT planning and designing, the author used that method to decide the elements of BRT system. The results show that the methods are useful in the planning and implementation of BRT system.
