In recent years, China has begun requiring a traffic impact study as a prerequisite for obtaining a development permit as the rapidly economic development in China has stimulated the development of all kinds of land uses. Trip generation rates for different developments are the key elements in the determination of the accuracy of the traffic impact study. However, trip generation rates study in China has just begun for no more than 20 years and the data of it is not enough to provide sustainable data support. For this reason, the objective of this study is to explore the trip generation rates for several kinds of land uses in Beijing, the capital of China. We choose three types of land uses, high-rise apartment, supermarket and office building, in Beijing to study, because trip generations generated by these three types of land uses rank top 3 among those generated by all kinds of land uses according to correlative analysis. In this study, a total of twenty-two high-rise apartment sites, twelve supermarkets and nine office buildings were selected for analysis. The principle of the survey site selecting is described first and then the basic information of the survey sites selected is provided in details, including the location, size, circumstance, etc. The survey method, the choice of survey time and the method of data collection and reduction are described. Then regression models were developed after choosing feasible independent variables. The trip generation rates for autos, bicycles, and transit riders were derived based on statistical analysis of the three land uses respectively. In addition, a comparison of China and US trip generation characteristics was also conducted using the study results and the 2004 ITE Trip Generation Manual. The study is an effort to achieve a better understanding of the impacts of some types of land uses on China's transportation system for planning and permitting. It also provides a more accurate reference for developers and is a first step toward developing a trip generation manual for China.
