The research of "residential image"is an attempt on the study of residential planning and design basing on residents'viewpoints. Through collecting and analyzing the feedback information of city inhabitants'resident situation, the paper researches on the interactive relationship among the inhabitants'feeling, their behavior tendency and the physical environment, and discusses how to face changes of "resident needs"and other interrelated problems. Firstly, though analyzing some theories and practices about the image of residential district including China and Western country, the paper establishes the theory basis and cognition structure correctly. Secondly, under the established guidance, the author does some case studies on residential image. Social survey is the primary method to acquire firsthand information. And field survey becomes the main medium of residential image questionnaire survey. Based on the questionnaire survey, more than 10 representative projects are selected in Wuhan. Field surveys and inhibitions'interviews are taken in these projects, in order to acquire the inhibitions'resident feeling further. According to the survey data, we find lots of residential districts are not imageable. Moreover, there are some differences between urban planner and residents on understanding about residential environment. In order to solve the problem, the paper analyzes elements of residential image, discusses design measures and puts forward some strategies. In the end, though discussing residential image on the city's scale, the author finds there are phenomena of city residential space separation in today's society. The thesis discusses the reason of the phenomena and possible planning countermeasures against the separation.
