A Study On The Reuse Of Old Industrial Buildings

The topic of this thesis belongs to the research of some specific building category in the field of old building reuse. The subjects of interest are the old industrial buildings that are increasingly emerging in urban areas. Our purpose is to find a continuously evaluative way for old industrial building reuse under the situation of China.Currently, in China, the contradiction between industrial evolution and urban development and the function transformation of local land after city planning result in the large amount of areas occupied by old industrial buildings.Compared the other old buildings (including historical and non-historical buildings), old industrial buildings have their own distinctive characteristics, such as solid constructions of main bodies, flexible spacious spaces, strong impact on the environments during construction or destruction, and their special design philosophy and aesthetics value. Therefore, they formed an important building category in old building reuse. Although the problem has its own specialty, the investigation of their reuse approaches is of universal significance.In this thesis, by analyzing and introducing the historical development, theoretical fundamentals, classification and implementation strategies in old industrial building reuse problems along with some practical case studies, we illustrate a full picture of old building reuse in China and other counties. We also provide a systematic analysis and discussion of the problem emerged from the old building reuse. Some practical and general suggestions and instructions are proposed with regard to the goals, procedures, approaches and strategies of old industrial building reuse.
