Urban conservation has drastically changed its theory, practice and even basic definitions over the last 50 years. The content of conservation has been enlarging since the 1931 Athens Charter to cover historic towns and urban areas as well as natural landscape and old buildings, and is now closely related to city construction and regeneration. Many historic cities have been destroyed during the long course of China's evolution and recent development, with only fragments left. However they are important component of the city. How to find their values, conserve them and integrate them into city's development is worth studying.The thesis is divided into 5 chapters as follows:Chapter 1: The concept of historic fragment. The definition and study range, related concepts, the meanings and purpose of the study, the content and methodology are proposed.Chapter 2: Basic research on the conservation and regeneration of historic fragment. The cause of formation, constitution, and distribution of historic fragment are analyzed. Its value and meaning of conservation and regeneration are discussed, so are the conservation content and principle.Chapter 3: Patterns of conservation and regeneration. Through classification and analysis of several cases, the thesis points out that the conservation of historic fragment is closely related to the area's regeneration. Some important methods are summarized.Chapter 4: Practice. Based on principles and methodologies discussed above and through in-depth analysis of the conservation and development plan of Xiaosu Street, the practical measures are further studied. Its particularities and problems are also pointed out.Chapter 5: The problems of historic fragment's conservation and regeneration. Problems and reasons in current China are stated from different aspects: conception, academic support, economic support and planning system. Possible solutions are proposed. |
