Contemporary Chinese urban residential buildings have been witnessed with more great transformation in the past 20 years or so than ever before, and the conditions of Chinese citizens' dwelling houses have already been raised from shortage to well-to-do. But in the process of establishing the commercial distribution system, there are some serious problems such as the structural surplus of commercial dwelling units and the chaos of real estate market. Therefore it will be great practical significant in analyzing the contemporary Chinese urban residential buildings in a view of culture and discussing its development directions of the future.Based on the widely accepted conceptions of culture and architectural culture, the thesis defined the conception of culture of residential buildings and its basic features. On the basis of the great transformation in the fields of economy, society and culture, the thesis presented the general features of contemporary Chinese urban residential buildings: return to the principles of original humanity, multi-factor and multi-direction transformation. The thesis summed up the cultural features of residential buildings in the three main development stages through the investigations on the representative projects. Then, further discussed the four major cultural phenomena of contemporary Chinese urban residential buildings. At the end, the author concluded by imaging the culture features and raising up establishment of four systems of open system, creative system, technological system and scientific?&?technical system as the solutions to the cultural reconstruction of Chinese urban residential buildings.
