The city of Beijing is located at the intersection point of the three main kinds of civilization-- hunting, herding and agriculture. All the emperors historically living in Beijing in every dynasty, had the needs of hunting, riding and troop training in aspects of their living, politics and military. Beijing has a very large range of everglade and champaign in its southern suburb. Such environment could meet the needs of the governors to the moment, and thus caused the establishment and the development of the Nan Yuan Garden. There are few buildings in the Nan Yuan Garden. And there are also few artificial scenes in such a large space. As a whole, the Nan Yuan Garden shows us a very natural view. This is much different from all other royal gardens in the Qing Dynasty. And also because of this, the Nan Yuan Garden has always been neglected by the scholars. The research works on it are also very weak. But in fact, the Nan Yuan Garden, which was ever as three times large in area as that of the Beijing city in the Ming and Qing Dynasty, historically played an important role in the city function of Beijing. It was the only place among the royal gardens of the Qing Dynasty, where the troop hunting could come off, and where the government could train and inspect army, welcome the foreign emissary. It was also the base for production, storage and environment maintenance as a functional part of the city of Beijing. These characters can show its significations which are much close to the original gardens in the Qin and Han Dynasty, and give a very special value in research work.
