Study About Re-Optimal Design Of Sidewalk Space In Shanghai

Highly intense city development results in needing more public space. It is an effective way of utilize the potential of the current space. As important public area in cities, occupy a most important percentage in public space, as the significant space of being the image of the city and enrich people's city life, sidewalks performs to harmonize the relationship between the city and the people living there, a series of problems have arisen, such as unified planning facilities, lacking of geographical characteristics, function using single, less artistic atmosphere, dirty. Sidewalks lose its expected functions, and need professional design. Thus we should pay more attention to the issue, create other functions besides transportation, develop it's potention as a public space, and solve the problem of shortage of public space in high density cities.This thesis follows the concept of experience enrichment; discuss the issue of re-optimal design of sidewalk space. The thesis states the related concepts of city public space and high density space, brings up the topic of re-optimal design, and analysis the elements, categories, functions and design of sidewalk space. Through questionnaires and on-site research of current sidewalks in Shanghai, the author studied carefully on typical cases of many streets, and analyzed the influencing factors:First, environment factor; Second, human factor; Third, traffic factor. And current the major problems of current design of sidewalks in Shanghai are:Firstly, Imperfection of overall compatibility;Secondly,Simplifica-tion of utilization; Thirdly, Lacking of human-based design; Fourthly, Unorgani-zed management; Furth, Missing of cultural consideration. The above problems influenced by history, economic, traffic, administrati-on. The root of the causing problem according to the study of sidewalks have already stay in the engineering function on the basis of transport,neglect the other functions as a public space, that is the pursuit of a higher spiritual level, arts enjoyable. To tackle the problems of current sidewalk spaces in Shanghai, the thesis proposes the following principles of the re-optimized designing: coexistence principle and easy-walking principle. After study and analysis related best practices, the thesis presents following feasible design strategies: multi-function strategy, artistic penetration strategy, multi-individuation strategy; moreover, creatively proposes to establish management policies and laws, setting up the specific measures for the optimized walking space experiencing models based on the sidewalks.It is expected that through this research, Under the background of high density city life,the current public space potentials would be developed in a larger range, the percentage of share and experiencing for public space would be enlarged among people, the life quality of Shanghai would be improved, and the people's life experience could be enriched, the city image of Shanghai would be improved and the competitive power of marketing could be increased.
