Bao Zhai-courtyard with distinctive features of defense, deduces many soul-stirring scenes in those years. The person that gets Central Plains gets the world. Shanxi and Henan locating in the Central Plains, so people had to defend their home with high wall to avoid the baptism of fire. The old courtyard is not only the direct reflection of the level of the old construction and living style of people, but also the culture refraction and condensation of ancient politics, economy, philosophy, culture, artistic and even customs.Wang Grand Courtyard as the folk Palace Museum, is solemn and magnificent, while Kang Baiwan Manor as one of the four manors. Their profound cultural background, complete layout, different defense and abundant construction space shape. I analyzed and discussed both of the courtyards with the method of site survey and theoretical analysis from their historical background, planning layout, defense feature, space arrangement, space interface, etc.The objective of the paper is to study the method of constructing to be applied to the design of modern buildings, especially the construction of new residential areas of some historic cultural villages and to provide proposals to protect and develop these constructions.The paper focused on the design approach of courtyard. I have thought outside the box and used the diagram to analyze it professionally. Specifically, the paper illustrated from three aspects------plane space:arrangement and location, combination of courtyards, courtyards grade, in-line analysis, space rhythm, level, penetration, connection, transition and morphology of the space, etc; form:analyze the image of defense and residence, especially the design approach and elements applied in the image of withstand; decoration:style, carrier and culture connotation of expression.In the last place, I put forward my own opinions of the protection and development of traditional residence and positive and negative influence from tourism, which were based on the space analysis of both courtyards.In a word, summary and induction is foundation. Comparison and analysis is method. Abstraction and application is purpose.
