Research On The Courtyard Space And Interface Of Lingnan Private Garden Based On Architectural Typology

The Lingnan private garden is an important part of Chinese classical garden. Compared with the Northern Garden and the Jiangnan garden, the Lingnan private garden has obvious regional and cultural characteristics. However, due to the lack of existing garden, there is not much research on the theory of Lingnan Private Garden. Existing research are most on the analysis of and decoration and the plant configuration. So this thesis is focused on the courtyard space, which means the space enclosed by buildings and walls. The main content of this thesis will be how these spaces are confined by the interface, what kind of characteristic do they have, and what difference can the combination of courtyard spaces make.The research object of this paper is the courtyard space in the Lingnan private gardens, and the analysis method is Architectural Typology. As one of the main trends of thought after the western modernism, Typology has been accepted and used by many of its supporters. Among them, the theory of Aldo Rossi, who was an Italian architect, is the most widely known. His theory contains of two parts, which are "Type Selection" and "Type Conversion". They are also the basis of the framework of this thesis. By collecting and analyzing a large number of documents and cases, I extract the type of courtyard space and interface from them. And then the types of Lingnan private garden are compared with the Jiangnan private garden, in order to find out the unique characteristics of Lingnan private garden. According to the method of "type conversion", this thesis puts it further to the guidelines for the design of new courtyard space, with actual cases for proof. The research based on the epistemology and methodology of the Architectural Typology theory, is not only in order to achieve deeper understanding of the Lingnan private garden, but also to find out a way of the continuation of Lingnan culture. The more important goal is to introduce a new perspective for the research of Lingnan private garden, and to provide inspiration for more later research.
