The historical secondary schools, which are the carriers of their history and cultures, represent some characteristic cultural deposits as well as the genius loci of campus in contemporary society. Along with the rapid development of the basic education and the aging of the historical buildings for various degrees, to renovate or to rebuild those becomes one of the significant ways to sustainably develop secondary schools in China. Furthermore, it is also the main orientation of the development of the secondary schools in the future.In this paper several historical secondary schools in Tianjin are investigated as study objects. In the first part, the development course of ideas of basic education at both home and aboard as well as both the development course and design concepts of renovating secondary schools are systematically summarized. In addition, some problems, which are both administration and architecture, in this process are raised by analyzing the general situation of domestic renovation of secondary schools. Then an idea on protective reservation and renovation is proposed directly towards the historical secondary schools. Correspondingly, strategy and details are proposed for reserving and renovating historical schools in Tianjin. The strategy is composed by the guiding ideology including the inheritance of the historical context, sustainable development of the nature recourses and the respect of the regional culture and the principle of Authenticity, Integrity and Coordination. After that the design approaches are concluded from the space, form and environment construction of the secondary schools, which is in order to establish a basically theoretical foundation for the reservation and renovation of the historical schools.
