China’s education is growing by leaps and bounds. With the strategy of rejuvenating the country through science and education listed as a basic state policy, education has become a basic industry. As the foundation of educations industry, elementary education is embracing a rising momentum of vigorous development. Along with the construction of new campuses, the renovation of old elementary schools is making a hot spot of school construction. At present, many elementary schools in Xi’an are facing such problems as obsolete image, inconvenient functional space and sluggish environment, which seriously hamper the construction and development of elementary schools and demand prompt solution. Therefore, the reasonable renovation of old campuses has gradually become an important means of resolving elementary education issues.This thesis starts with an exploration into theories concerning renovation of elementary schools. By summarizing the tendencies of architectural design for elementary schools and considering real situations, this thesis discusses the necessity and feasibility of renovating elementary campuses. This thesis also illustrates the background of renovating elementary campuses by analyzing the factors affecting renovation.Then this thesis does sufficient material analysis and field research on present-day elementary campuses in Xi’an so as to understand how every kind of elementary campus is being used. Given the influences of Xi’an unique geographical features like cityscape, history, culture and climate on the construction of elementary campuses, this thesis identifies the problems in how those campuses are used and summarizes the existing ways of renovation. Based on that, this thesis puts forward a design philosophy that may guide the renovation of elementary campuses in future, and sets the next-phase goal of renovating Xi’an elementary campuses.Lastly, this thesis sums up the specific strategies of renovating Xi’an elementary campuses on the basis of above-mentioned research results. Considering theoretical research results and real needs of all elementary schools, this thesis explains the strategy in three aspects:retrofit of overall space, renovation of a single building, and recreation of external environment.First, from the perspective of the campus as a whole, the thesis provides overall ideas and plans of renovation. Second, the thesis concerns single building on campus, studying the strategies of renovating from both image and function. Third,the thesis discusses renovation strategies of external environment,focusing on not only landscape environment, but also cultural environment. During the study, combined with the development of character building education and growth characteristics of adolescents, using architectural theory as a guide, the thesis fully exploits the possibilities of principles and strategies innovation in process of elementary school renovation design.To meet the developing needs of our contemporary education,we should combine old and new elements of the campus into a unified whole, and create a suitable environment from the inside to out that students could have a healthy growth in it.This thesis aims to explore the principle and strategy of renovating modern elementary campuses for reference through a summary of relevant theories and a bunch of research.
