With development of technologies and shipbuilding industry, the pace of upgrading marine products has been greatly accelerated. In the modern shipbuilding industry, the layout design of pipeline system plays an important role in the overall layout design of the ship pipe system. Currently, system design in practical work mainly depends on the experience of designers, because of larger numbers of pipes and the complex constraints, pipe layout design is time-consuming, and there is a big gap in the technologies between layout design of the pipe system and other parts of the ship, which seriously influence ship design life cycle. For trying to find solutions, a large number of relevant researches have been carried out. But so far, there is no practical mature methods can be applied directly. So it has been urgent issues to seek new, practical design methods and design tools in the field of ship piping layout. This paper takes research achievements in the field of three-dimensional layout as references, combined with artificial intelligence technology, shipbuilding CAD technology, offer a foundation for intelligent design of the ship pipeline.Based on the main idea of basic genetic algorithm, combined with the specific problems of ship piping layout, a number of improvements have been made to make the genetic algorithm shows better adaptability when solving the pipe routing problem, consequently pipe layout design results are more reasonable. These improvements include:improvements to the fitness function, genetic operator and the pipeline route process. Experiments show that these improvements can overcome precocity phenomenon and phenomenon of generation local optimal solution in evolutionary process of the genetic algorithm, which means it can improve practicability of optimized layout design of the ship pipe using improved Genetic Algorithm. The paper has analysised and introduced the influence of inscape of Genetic Algorithm that applied to the ship pipe layout optimization to algorithm, and summarized the laws and internal relations between parameter value and coefficient value. In addition, this paper designs macro-program to achieve path's visulization in the CATIA platform. All of these has done fundamental work for Virtual Assembly Design of ship pipe system.Experimental results show that layout design of pipe using improved Genetic Algorithm and display work in the environment of software CATIA are successful, which is helpful to solve practical problems in the layout design of pipe system.
