Environmental problems come along with the emerge of the human activities. According to the Second World War, the history of their development can be divided into two parts: before the war, these were some country's or regional problems; however, after the war, the problems became global ones and replaced wars to be the focus of the world, furthermore, they are becoming intenser and intenser. It is urgent for the human beings to solve these problems. As the largest inter-governmental international organization, the United Nations has the responsibility to protect the environment and promote the sustainable development. In order to work out the problems, the United Nations have organized three conferences on the human environment----Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment held in 1972, Rio de Janeiro United Nations Conference on Environment and Development of 1992 and Johannesburg Summit on Sustainable Development of 2002. These conferences play important roles in deepening the understanding of the environment issues and improving the environment, so they are named as three milestones in the history of the protection of environment. This paper aims to show the history of these problems and of the awareness of them, to provide some references for the future by analyzing the background, the process, the performance of these conferences and the influences on China deeply.
