The progressive die is a kind of complex and precise die, which possesses many advantages,such as high efficiency, high accuracy and long life. It has been widely applied in light industry, electric industry, automobile industry, aero-space industry, etc. Since one set of progressive die is very complex on structure and contains more than 100 components, it really is a challenging job to designers and die makers. The CAD system for progressive dies, as a tool to raise the design efficiency and die quality, has been attracting more and more attentions. How to design the structure and components of a progressive die effectively has become one of the main problems to be solved in the CAD system for progressive dies. This thesis tries to overcome these problems by applying the associated design methodology.The purpose of associated design is to keep the consistency of design data while a CAD system for progressive die is used to design a progressive die. Its essence is to keep the relationship between components (or objects) with design constraints, in order that while an object is updated or changed, the others related to it can also be changed properly. By analyzing the characteristics of the structure of progressive dies, the method of realizing associated design with variable assembling technology and parameterized technology was proposed. In order to simplify the description and handling of design constrains, they are classified into four types, namely part's orientation constraints, geometry constraints, dimension constraints and adhering constraints. These constrains are associated by expression of design variables, and their updating is carried out automatically by message-driven methodology.All the methods mentioned above has been embedded in the standard part design module of the CAD system, which supports associated design for progressive dies. With the system, designers can expediently design the standard parts and their assembly, therefore the efficiency of designing a progressive die structure is largely improved.
