Progressive Die was popular as it generate with a high degree of automation, high efficiency, products and high precision, good interchangeability. Because of the complex architecture, there are many factors should be considered in the progressive die relief design work. So it costs a lot of time and experienced staff with high design technology required. So many companies have developed dedicated Progressive Die CAD system of their own, such as NX Progressive Die Wizard (PDW). Relief design is an important part of the Progressive Die structure design, but there are still some obvious inadequacies in PDW relief design. The design process seems to be complicated doesn't perform very well in relevance, the relief can not be previewed and the way editing the entity is not flexible enough. In this context, the author carried out research on this subject. After analyzed the current mold CAD technology and the requirements of the Progressive Die design, the author developed a new method of relief design based on KBE according to NX user's requirements. This paper described three key technologies of the system, Knowledge Based Engineering (KBE), UG/WAVE, Knowledge Fusion (KF). The author used KF_BOUNDBOX method instead of UDF method to rebuild the relief design system. This made the relief design easier and more efficient. User can use mouse to drag geometry to achieve a flexible design. All works mentioned above have been embedded in the package for automatically Relief Design system. After been demonstrated by some applications, it shows that the system satisfied the customer and can greatly improve design efficiency.
