Two major factors involved in the state-of-the-art development of textile products are the technology in designing elegant appearance and the capacity of agile manufacturing. Among which, computer aided design usually plays an important role. The goal of the presented work is the modeling and simulation of the geometrical appearance of yarn and woven fabric in a 3D manner. The techniques for simulating woven fabric and problems existing in current CAD systems are discussed. The knowledge of weaving, theory of comp'uter graphics and object-oriented programming technique is employed, and the 3D (three dimension) geometric property of yarn in the fabric is thoroughly investigated. 3D yarn modeling and rendering technique is developed based on the theories of woven fabric geometry and mechanics.Yarn is the basic element of woven fabric. The simulation of yarn has direct impacts on the 3D visualization of woven fabric, which indicates that the construction of 3D model should be emphasized. According to the widthwise and lengthwise configuration of yarn, as well as the twisting configuration of yarn, 3D yarn modeling can be divided into cross-section modeling, yarn path modeling and twist modeling. A 3D geometrical model is built in terms of the theories of woven fabric geometry and mechanics. In this model, the cross section of yarn is described as a controlled cubic B-spline, and the yarn path is described as a cubic B-spline controlled by the characteristic parameter of Peirce ellipse section model. The twist simulation of yarn is approached through the cross section rotation. The basic lightening and material model of yarn is also employed to simulate the illumination of yarn in the physical world. Furthermore, yarn structures in three dimensions are displayed though solid-modeling techniques and surface-modeling techniques. After analyzing the section shape, curve shape and relative positions of yarns among the fabric space, the topology structure of the yarns in real fabric is explored and the woven structures in three dimensions are displayed by using solid-modeling techniques and surface-modeling techniques. The output of this research can be useful in the visualization of woven fabric. The idea and methods employed in this work provide a new way to analyze the facial appearance of yarn and fabric.DongfengWang (Textile Materials and Textile Design) Supervisor by: Prof Shizhong Cui with ZZTIAssociate Prof Tianyong Zheng withZZTIProf Shanyuan Wang...
