The purpose of the paper is to calculate and simulate the geometry of the plain wovenfabric by a mechanical model. Yarn is assumed as an elastic body and a section of yarn isconsidered to be composed of a slider and a section of spring. The yarns diameter, density, fineness, machine tension and elasticity coefficient are considered in the model. In order tocalculate the3D coordinates of the weave points, the initial geometric structure of the plainwoven fabric starts at9thphase and Hooke’s law is applied when the yarns moved wereunder elongation shorting to calculate yarns force. Yarns movement trends were determinedby the force. Yarns force was calculated repeatedly until reaching a balance by givingiterative step-length therefore fabric also was in a stable structure. The3D spatial positionsof warp/weft key points were determined, too. Meanwhile, plain woven fabric samples wereweaved to measure the flattened degree, they are non-destructive measured along the yarncenterline direction by a Keyence digital microscope in accordance with the yarn crosssection was assumed as elliptical variation. Results were got that between the flatteningcoefficient and measurement position was highly positive linear correlation coefficient, andthere was no significant correlation between yarns tightness and flattening. The yarn3Dsurface model was built with B-spline surface. Quadratic B-spline curve was to builddifferent cross-section of the yarn, and preserving cubic B-spline curve was to constructyarn bucking form. According to the algorithm mentioned above, a computer application isdeveloped with the help of Visual Studio2010and OpenGL graphics library, and thefunctions of the software can be described as following:(1) the three-dimensionalcoordinates of key points of the woven structure is calculated after the geometry getsbalance;(2) the three-dimensional coordinates are outputted in.txt file at a givensequence;(3) the.txt file are used to display the3D geometry structures on the screen.Several figures of the different plain woven fabrics are rendered according to the calculated results, which indicated the calculation is reasonable and the figures reflect the fabricperfectly. The study may provide a guideline for calculating the geometric structure of themore complex woven fabric.
