The Research Of Bird Resources In Shanghai Jiuduansha Wetland Nature Reserve

Shanghai Jiuduansha Wetland Nature Reserve is located at the estuary of Yangtze River. It is a shoal made by the sand from Yangtze River. The protecting targets there are birds and the estuary shoal physiognomy. Jiuduansha Wetland Nature Reserve has great bio-diversity, less interruptions by human activities. It is one of the fewest areas in China where basically remains virgin estuary wetland. So it is of high value in protection.The estuary district of Yangtze River where Jiuduansha lies locates in the middle of east coast of China. It is the midpoint of the route which migratory birds migrate from east Asian to Australia. Every year millions of birds pass by, or stop, or live through the winter. Besides, part of resident birds live there all year around. Jiuduansha Wetland Nature Reserve is the district whose main target is to protect birds, with rich resources of birds. However, up to now, there are less research reports or academic papers. The most elaborate investigation summary about resources of birds completed in 2003, then was published. Some finite investigation was done in the book which recorded 113 species of birds belonging to 9 orders and 21 families. In order to figure down the detailed situation of the bird resources in Jiuduansha as well as to provide material for further studying and protecting the birds in Jiuduansha, I chose this theme as my research project in my paper.The investigation of bird resources was from May 2005 to June 2007, cost 2 years and 2 months, and involved 25 times for field work.During the whole investigation 125 species of birds belong to 12 orders and 26 families were recorded, 40 species of that were recorded for the first time in Jiuduansha. This investigation included 1 new species of first-grade state protection birds: Ciconia boyciana, and 8 new species of second-grade state protection birds: Egretta eulophotes, Aix galericulata, Pandion haliaetus, Milvus korschun, Larus relictus, Falco subbuteo, Falco peregrines, Circus cyaneus. It analyzed the district composing and characteristic of bird resources in Jiuduansha Wetland Nature Reserve. It pointed out the birds community structure , the characteristic of environment and how birds community choose the environment. It also analyzed the problems Jiuduansha Wetland Nature Reserve faced, and raised the corresponding protection measures.
