Wanghu Lake is located in the east of Yangxin County of Hubei Province, and has been listed as one of the prior protection fields of the Plan of Wetland Protection Action in China. During the recent several years, Wanghu Lake is confronted with some dangers resulting from various unreasonable exploitation and utilization. To table any proposals theoretically for the construction and protection of the wetland, the plant resources, the diversity of plant species and communities, and the plant flora components in Wanghu Lake wetland were investigated and analyzed in this study. There are 182 species of vascular plants that belong to 50 families and 114 genera in the Wanghu Lake wetland, including 4 species of ferns (4 genera in 4 families), 129 dicotyledonous species (78 genera in 35 families), and 49 monocotyledonous species (32 genera in 11 families). These plants consist of 14 species of emergent plants (7.7%), 9 species of floating attached plants (4.9%), 7 species of submersed plants (3.8%), 4 species of floating plants (2.2%), and 148 species of Hydrophytes (81.3%).Based on the geographical distribution, the flora of genera in Wanghu Lake can be divided into 12 distribution types and 5 variations. There are 36 genera belong to Cosmopolitan distribution type, and 27 genera belong to North Temperate distribution type, 48.51% of total species; and 18 genera belong to Pantropic distribution type, 19.80% of total species; and 9 genera belong to Old World Temperate distribution type, 10.89% of total species; and 7 genera belong to East Asian distribution type, 6.93% of total species. So the North Temperate elements of genera and species are dominant, and the flora has a distinct temperate characteristic.Richness index, Pielou's evenness index, gregariousness, Simpson index and Shannon-Wiener index of 22 plant communities were used to analyze the diversity of communities. In addition, the communities that contain similar dominant species, the terraneous and aquatic communities, and the communities that located in different distance from water line were compared. The relationship of species diversity and community succession was also analyzed. The results indicate that disturbances exist widely in the Wanghu wetland, but the disturbing intensity is various in different regions, with more intense disturbance occurred in the Wuzhuazui, Shitouzui and Saiqiaohu. The community diversity indices could be improved by some appropriate disturbances, high intense disturbance, however, usually declines the community diversity indices, resulting in community degradation and species extinction. The diversity indices of aquatic communities were lower than that of terraneous communities in the wetland, and the aquatic communities was influenced more obviously than the terraneous communities by the same intense disturbance. The aquatic communities in Wanghu Lake wetland are single, and some communities, such as Phragmites communis, Zizania caduciflora and Arundo donax, have been destroyed severely.Furthermore, the species diversity indices tended to increase while the community located in higher position away from the water line, and community succession happened during this progress. The communities undergoing succession have higher diversity indices than neighboring communities.According to the current situation of Wanghu Lake wetland, some suggestions are brought forward here with respect to ecological protection and construction.
